HeartStart West Loch Awe Group

Members of Dalavich and Kilchrenan community have recently undergone training as trainers to help teach emergency procedures that will buy time for casualties in an emergency situation until the professional teams arrive.  The scheme which was implemented by Community Councillor Robert Connor will be up and running within the next few weeks.   The aim of the scheme is to teach people what to do in an emergency situation such as heart attack, or choking.  This essential training will be availabe to anyone wishing to learn these basic procedures.  The training is basic and it is hoped that many people will come forward to learn these procedures to help in the event of an emergency.  Would you know what to do if you found someone you thought was having a heart attack?  Anyone who is interested in learning these procedures should contact Robert Connor on 01866 844074 for further information.

Water Safety

Water Safety is an issue that is paramount to anyone on or near a body of water such as the Sea a Loch or a River.  The R.N.L.I give out free information on how to stay safe at Sea, but these rules can also apply to the Lochs.

Here are some rules of advice given by the R.N.L.I.

ITSWET

1.    Inform - Tell others where you are going

2.    Training - Knowledge of your activity is essential

3.    SOS device - Carry some means of calling for help

4.    Wear a life jacket - It's a life statment not a fashion

5.    Engine and fuel checks - Do you have enough fuel and spares?

6.    Tides and weather - Check conditions before you head out

These six peices of advice can make a difference to a life or death situation. For further details please visit the R.N.L.I. website at

www.rnli.org.uk/seasafety you can also obtain free information documents from the website.

Be sensible, stay safe out there!

Forestry Notes September 2010

1.       It’s a relatively quiet time of year in the forest (dangerous words!), with the bulk of the summer work done & the planting season not quite upon us yet. The time when we take stock of last years programmes & draw together those for the coming winter. It’s one of the times to appreciate the beauty of the area, as the vegetation starts to subtly change colour. There appears to be a healthy crop of acorns and hazelnuts this year, so the squirrels will be getting busy soon with their own winter preparations.

2.       Harvesting continues in Inverliever at  Lochan a Bhruic. Harvesting operations are still  focused on the Loch Avich block, but these are tailing off at the moment, so there will be a gradual reduction in timber traffic in due course.

3.       On the forest management side of things, excavator mounding is almost finished in the Fernoch area and while it is planned to mound some of the older Loch Avich sites, a current lack of contractor resource means that these may be delayed until next year. The site at MacKenzies Road, which was half-mounded last year is also due to be completed this autumn.

4.       We are currently in the middle of carrying out stocking density surveys and it is pleasing to find that, despite the severe frost & subsequent drought, that last winters plantings had to endure, they are generally surviving well. Until the deer get hungry anyway……..

5.       Top-up spraying against the Pine Weevil is also ongoing on last years plantings, and we will be treating the few areas of Japanese Knotweed towards the end of the month.
