Forestry Notes September 2010
1. It’s a relatively quiet time of year in the forest (dangerous words!), with the bulk of the summer work done & the planting season not quite upon us yet. The time when we take stock of last years programmes & draw together those for the coming winter. It’s one of the times to appreciate the beauty of the area, as the vegetation starts to subtly change colour. There appears to be a healthy crop of acorns and hazelnuts this year, so the squirrels will be getting busy soon with their own winter preparations.
2. Harvesting continues in Inverliever at Lochan a Bhruic. Harvesting operations are still focused on the Loch Avich block, but these are tailing off at the moment, so there will be a gradual reduction in timber traffic in due course.
3. On the forest management side of things, excavator mounding is almost finished in the Fernoch area and while it is planned to mound some of the older Loch Avich sites, a current lack of contractor resource means that these may be delayed until next year. The site at MacKenzies Road, which was half-mounded last year is also due to be completed this autumn.
4. We are currently in the middle of carrying out stocking density surveys and it is pleasing to find that, despite the severe frost & subsequent drought, that last winters plantings had to endure, they are generally surviving well. Until the deer get hungry anyway……..
5. Top-up spraying against the Pine Weevil is also ongoing on last years plantings, and we will be treating the few areas of Japanese Knotweed towards the end of the month.
