Water Safety

Water Safety is an issue that is paramount to anyone on or near a body of water such as the Sea a Loch or a River.  The R.N.L.I give out free information on how to stay safe at Sea, but these rules can also apply to the Lochs.

Here are some rules of advice given by the R.N.L.I.

ITSWET

1.    Inform - Tell others where you are going

2.    Training - Knowledge of your activity is essential

3.    SOS device - Carry some means of calling for help

4.    Wear a life jacket - It's a life statment not a fashion

5.    Engine and fuel checks - Do you have enough fuel and spares?

6.    Tides and weather - Check conditions before you head out

These six peices of advice can make a difference to a life or death situation. For further details please visit the R.N.L.I. website at

www.rnli.org.uk/seasafety you can also obtain free information documents from the website.

Be sensible, stay safe out there!

Notes from the Forestry Commission

1.       Harvesting operations have now been completed at MacKenzies Road, bar some minor chainsaw works. Both the Timber Trail and the Kilmaha – New York Cycle Trail are open again. The “MacKenzies Road” will be re-erected once all timber has been dispatched from the site, and there is little danger of damage to the sign by lorry traffic.

2.       The Loch Avich Cycle Trail has a closure on the section running along the south side of Loch Avich, which will be in place until Easter 2010. This is necessary, as a result of  the cablecrane operations crossing the road itself, and unfortunately means that a complete circuit of the loch is not possible at present. Operations will however cease over the Christmas period, and the full circuit will be possible then.

3.       The bulk of harvesting operations in the area have moved to the North Loch Avich area at present, so there is a steady stream of timber wagons through Gleann Measham and Druimdarroch.

4.       Collaig is a busy place at the moment, with  various contractors to Greenpower busy with windfarm associated constructions, in addition to our own fleet of 2 excavator mounders. These 2 excavators will be moving to the Barnaline /Kilmun area for a few weeks in January, before going up to Fernoch.

5.       Restocking operations started at the beginning of December – so naturally the ground has immediately frozen solid! Weather conditions permitting however, restocking and beating-up (replacement of dead restock trees) operations will be our main focus for the next few months.

6.       Erection of the fence at the “campsite”  between Dalavich Cottage & New York should be commencing shortly……
